Rumor Control: Culprits Confess to Bomb Scare Prank week before Finals

This morning, several students posted typed notices in the hallways and bathrooms, one with a drawing of an apparent bomb which suggested that one may have been planted on school property. As a precaution, Vice Principal Wehrsig, after consulting a police officer who happened to be doing an anti-drug presentation at one of our classes, ordered an evacuation. The nearby police bomb squad rushed over, all rooms were carefully checked, and classes were resumed in under 45 minutes.

Good detective work by the Vice Principal soon uncovered eye witnesses who saw the culprits posting the notices. The parents of the half-dozen or so students implicated in this prank have been contacted, and I have appointed a Disciplinary Committee consisting of Vice-Principal Susan Wehrsig and veteran teacher Rodney Cambra to recommend appropriate sanctions for these pranksters to be on my desk by Monday afternoon. The normal high school examination schedules will proceed next week as planned.     St. Joseph School, always safe, always secure.

    Rejoice in the miracle of Christmas. I am excited about returning to Hilo and St. Joseph School. I'll be on duty on February 16 for what I hope will be a smooth and productive transition. Sweet Bread sale for Emily Thompson, St. Joseph School 7th Grader

Parishioner Carol Moniz is coordinating a sweat bread fundraiser for St. Joseph School 7th grader, Emily, who has cystic fibrosis and therefore huge medical bills. Kokua is also coming from the O'Keefe's bakery which will be available to the St. Joseph's volunteers on Thursday for the actual baking of the bread. Carol requests a rough count by phoning my office at 935-4936 by tomorrow (Wed.), with your pledge (number loaves @ $5.00). No tickets will be issued and the payment and pickup location (most likely the church or school) will be posted here. Mahalo for your kokua on this holiday effort to support a member of our extended St. Joseph ohana !

REMINDER: Parents Financial Aid Night set for Dec. 3, this evening

Bob Williams, St. Joseph School college career counselor is coordinating a "Financial Aid" night for parents of Juniors and Seniors in the St. Joseph High School Lecture Room from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wed. Dec. 3rd. (Note: This notice was first posted here on Nov. 24. The location of the meeting has been changed from the elementary school cafeteria to the high school lecture room.)

Country Fair Evaluation Meeting is Thursday

The Country Fair Committee will be holding an evaluation meeting this week Thursday, December 4, 2003, at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. All are welcome to attend and share feedback. Committee Chairpersons should plan to attend. Those who are unable to make the meeting are asked to fill out the brief evaluation form sent home with students last week Wednesday.

A BIG MAHALO to all Committee Chairpersons, community members and the St. Joseph School and Parish Family for a job well done. Everyone contributed to the success of this year's Country Fair. We are looking forward to an even better Fair in 2004! Thank you!
